Summer Course: Positive Psychology

Wednesdays, July 2, 9, 16, 23  | 11:00 am to noon

Medford Campus Theater | Open to residents and public | $15 per person.

Sara Martino, Ph.D., Stockton College Assistant Professor of Psychology,  will be the guest professor for this four-week lecutre series focusing on new therapeutic techniques in psychology.

WEEK ONE.  There will be an overview of traditional psychotherapy methods, an explanation of positive psychology, and exploration of a strengths-based approach in psychology. Positive psychology represents a shift in the field from a medical model to a strengths-based model. Therapists focus on resiliency instead of symptoms and diagnosis.

WEEK TWO.  The lecture will cover the theory of positive psychology, including its benefits. Positive psychology has been linked to improvement in executive functioning, relationship enhancement, and overall mood improvement. We will also discuss the concept of gratitude and gratitude interventions used in research.

WEEK THREE.  We will continue discussion of gratitude and introduce the concept of mindfulness.

During weeks two and three, participants will be introduced to techniques for using gratitude and mindfulness on their own.

WEEK FOUR.  The final lecture will involve a deeper exploration of mindfulness. The future of therapy and the inclusion of positive psychology will also be discussed. This last session will wrap up with question of future study and therapeutic interventions.

Fall  Course: Understanding American Government

Mondays, September 8, 15, 22, and 29 and October 6 and 13 | 3:30-5:00 pm

Medford Campus Theater | Open to residents and public | $25 per person.

This course will be an under-the-hood examination of the government—its branches, powers and relationship to state powers—and the government’s role in the economy and social welfare. Coming at the time of the general election campaign, it can afford an enlightening perspective on what the candidates promise. 

Aman L. McLeod, Ph.D., J.D., Assistant Professor in Political Science and School of Law at Rutgers University, Camden, will teach six classes on consecutive Monday afternoons.
