Continuing Care Retirement Community

The Medford Leas Birders report for the 4th quarter of 2014 describes the club’s monthly trips and monthly meetings.   This post includes that report and also a link to David Attenborough’s video “The Mastery of Flight” which was shown at one meeting and to a page with Alex Webb’s bird carvings, which were shown at another.   ML Birders Website AlexWebbcolorBird Carvings by Alex Webb Medford Leas Birders meet the first Wednesday of each month in the Linden Room where we have twenty to thirty residents and guests joining us for our monthly presentations, which are always open to everyone.    Six club members are responsible for planning programs and six other members plan our field trips. Field Trips: We started off our year with a delightful and productive birding trip to Bombay Hook in Delaware where saw and identified about 50 different species of birds migrating through the area. Our next trip was to the Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, an annual trip for us.  This year we went a month earlier than usual so did not see as many of the wintering birds as in the past.  Island Beach State Park was our November venture.  A cold windy day and the birds were hunkered down protecting themselves from the wind.  As birders say “one bad day of birding is better than a good day at work.”  It is a pleasure to be outside observing and enjoying the beauty of nature. We look forward to our December trip to Barnegat Light and Long Beach Island. Programs:  Barbara Jones an avid, knowledgeable birder in our area, spoke and showed pictures trying to help us identify those elusive “shore birds.” At our October Meeting we watched the David Attenborough video “The Mastery of Flight.” (embedded below) Our very own residents supplied us with our last two programs, first Alex Webb brought his beautiful bird carvings and explained the process he uses to make them and Perry Krakora told us about the birds we might see on our December trip to the Barnegat jetties. We continue to maintain a bulletin board in the corridor going from the Community Building to Court 6, featuring what birds we see on our Field Trips and the residents who go with us.
