Ten species of nesting birds at Lumberton Meadow

Bird boxes with Bluebirds, Carolina Chickadees, House Wrens, Carolina Wrens, and Tree Swallows. Trees and bushes with Cardinals, Fly Catchers, Grey Catbirds, Robins, and Grey Catbirds. Stalker Pete likes to check out nesting birds. His latest email lists nest locations of these ten species.

Lumberton Birds, including Bluebirds

Pete McCord can see bluebirds from his back deck. A few days before Pete saw the bluebirds behind his home, nine Medford Leas Birders took a walk on Lumberton Trails and recorded 33 species of birds. Robins in the Water

The three photos in the post show robins enjoying water. Today is March 8, 70 degrees and tomorrow’s forecast is for 78. Back at the time of the Annual Bird Census robins were stripping berries off the Holly bushes and trees. This morning there was a robin bathing in the Atrium Garden. I can’t miss this excuse to show off the best photo I ever took. I call it “Robin in the Rain.” Lumberton homes are reflected in the water. — from the mlra photo Album Lumberton Meadow in the Rain.

29th Annual Winter Bird Census – 27 species, 800 birds

Bald Eagle, Red Tailed Hawk, Great Horned Owl, Great Blue Heron, Northern Flicker, Red Bellied Woodpecker, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker, Ring-billed Gulls and much much more. Actually there were two winter bird census. On the Medford campus there were 27 species, 800 birds; at the 17th winter census on the Lumberton Campus there were 34 species and more than 2000 birds, more than a thousand of those were Canada Geese. Both campuses had swarms of Robins filling up on bright red Holly berries.

Costanza Photos at Palmyra Cove

Photographs by resident Joe Costanza, a world class nature photographer, are being exhibited at the Palmyra Cove Nature Park during the entire month of December. Joe’s exhibit includes photographs of birds, plants, and landscapes. This is his second exhibit at the Nature Park, the previous one having been five years ago. Joe is a well-known prize-winning photographer whose work has been published in important periodicals, including Nature’s Best, Birders World Magazine, and the Nature Photographers’ Annual.

Not many avocations compel one to rise before dawn and drive 50 miles to a remote destination. However, 23 participants did just that for the Pathways to Learning birding trip to the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge (Brigantine) on October 30. It was the largest Medford Leas Birders field trip group, and all were rewarded with a cool, sunny, and otherwise spectacular day of birding.

Combining Birding and History

Ten birders, including six Pathways guests, participated in the trip. On a sunny and cool day, they identified 30 bird species, enjoyed a quiet lunch in the park, and had a brief history lesson. The group started the morning of May 13 at River Winds, a relatively recent development founded largely on a dredge spoils dump along the Delaware River. They ended the day at historic Red Bank Battlefield in the town of National Park, NJ. River Winds was conceived in 2002 as a 1,100-acre recreational and community center of West Deptford Township, NJ, while Red Bank dates back to pre-Revolutionary War times.
