This week on Thursday I enjoyed a hi-def Mahler 3 video (in our theater equipped with Surround Sound), Leonadis Kavakos playing Sibelius with the Philadelphia Orchestra on Friday afternoon (via the Medford Leas bus), and Peter Basquin live in our theater on Saturday evening. The first video below shows Basquin at Wabash College playing Beethoven’s 30th Sonata. The second video below shows Kavakos playing the Sibelius at the Mariinsky Theater with Gergiev conducting. ~Maggie

Seventy-six trombones? No, but lots of brass and percussion and many clarinets and other woodwinds. The triangle could easily be heard even with all the other instruments playing and the piccolo had the usual starring moment during “Stars and Stripes Forever.” But what about the bassoon? Can a bassoon affect the sound of the ensemble? (hmm — Herb and I thought not. Anyone care to comment?) One thing is certain, the Eastern Wind Symphony does affect the life of a bassoonist. How? Because it affects the lives of all its musicians. The EWS website puts it this way:
Through music, dance, and Power Point, the Norwood Family of the Nanticoke-Lenape Tribe gave us a program that was both delightful and instructive. Trinity Norwood and her father, John Norwood, were the speakers. John’s strong voice and drumming provided music. Trinity’s dance was energetic; her mother and grandmother demonstrated a slow, stately dance.
