First Fall in Lumberton

by Kathy Riley
After a September that seemed like an extension of summer, we began to have cooler weather and an occasional touch of frost, interspersed with some eighty-degree days whose heat and humidity had us digging out those summer clothes we’d carefully put away.  I thought back to the year before when we were in the early stages of our move and visited the soon-to-be new home several times. I knew that I would be living there by late winter, but emotionally I still hadn’t let go of my old city home.

A Newcomer’s Perspective

by Kathy Riley
“All right, everyone, let’s jog to the end of the pool and back,” commands Ann Naulty, Lumberton resident and volunteer pool exercise leader.  The group breaks into an awkward trot, some faster, some slower.  “When you get to the wall, jog backwards!”  Ann directs, and we reverse the process.  There is much laughter and an occasional collision as we get ready for an hour of low impact, high energy fitness with our friends.  The sun tops the trees, and suddenly, we are all much warmer and making jokes about our ‘spa.’  Enjoying an outdoor pool isn’t all that unusual until you look at a calendar and see the date — September 23.

Jumping Right In –Two Weeks in May

Jumping Right In – Our First Snowstorm Here

This week Puxatawney Phil, the ‘winter’s end’ predicting groundhog, said we were not going to get an extension of winter this year, just the usual February 2 plus six weeks. So, assuming he is correct, winter ends on March 15! But, before that, I wanted to tell you about our first snowstorm experience here.

Jumping Right In – A Concert

Here Jayne Bodner tells of her relationship with music in general and specifically with the symphony that was streamed in the Theater on January 7.   An earlier post called “A film score without the film” is also about this symphony. Here Jayne explains what this music means to her personally and tells of the smile on her face when she learned it was scheduled as the first Music Video of 2016

Jumping Right In: A Holiday Wish

This may not sound like a holiday greeting card, inviting you to enjoy the warmth of the season and the promise of a new year. But it is. There is nothing like relocating, to start a new phase of life, to make you overwhelmingly aware of all you have, and all you want and think you want, of possessions, routine and tradition. It is all, every bit, so transparently right here, all around you in your new life. Every thing and thought has its own glow or glare, and it can feel like you are the deer in the headlights.
