Joe Jordan and his Model BoatsIf you are visiting the blog’s home page, choose the “continue reading” link to see a gallery of 23 model boats built by Joe Jordan.    After yet another model plane crash in Rancocas, a young Joe Jordan decided he needed a different hobby. Thus model boat building became a reality for him. In 1998, after retiring, Joe bought a catalog business from a friend. The business sold model boats and boat parts. Another acquaintance had lots of models and equipment. Joe couldn’t resist having access to all of that, and was drawn in—hook, line and sinker. The Jordans’ home, while solidly affixed to the ground, looks as if one could cruise away in any number of beautiful model boats built by Joe. Some are on the walls, some on shelves, and some even hanging from ceilings. He patiently explains that models can be motorized (and actually cruise in the water, including our pool); or they can be “shelf queens,” living out of water. Joe is a member and past president of the Philadelphia Ship Model Society and says that the quality of models there was an eye opener for him. As a liaison officer of the Philadelphia Seaport Museum, he volunteers two days a week doing boat building and restoration. Should you be interested, contact Joe by commenting to this post and he will gladly introduce you to the life of model boat building. One watchword from the museum is “the closer you look, the better it gets.” While Joe relates this to model boat building, I, after a tour of his works, think it could apply to much of our lives. He learns something every day, and so did I.  by Barbara Zimmerman, Lumberton Campus Chronicle, April 2017 To see the photos large, click on any thumbnail and click the “next” or “back” arrow at the side of  the image.
