Two recent forums provided a look back at Quaker Nonviolence.  The Burlington County Times had a rather detailed article about the January 9 forum on WWII Conscientious Objectors that featured two residents of Medford Leas, Neil Hartman and Warren Sawyer. A week later the forum, presented by Walter Naegle, was on Bayard Rustin, who is best remembered as the organizer of the 1963 March on Washington.   What is not so well known is that Rustin, who was raised as a Quaker, “began his lifelong career as a social and political activist in 1937, when he moved to New York after completing an activist training program of the American Friends Service Committee.”   Follow this link for a brief biography of Rustin by Walter Naegle who was Rustin’s partner from 1977 until Rustin’s death in 1987.
