Combining Birding and History
by Miriam Swartz and Joe Costanza
Ten birders, including six Pathways guests, participated in the trip. On a sunny and cool day, they identified 30 bird species, enjoyed a quiet lunch in the park, and had a brief history lesson. The group started the morning of May 13 at River Winds, a relatively recent development founded largely on a dredge spoils dump along the Delaware River. They ended the day at historic Red Bank Battlefield in the town of National Park, NJ. River Winds was conceived in 2002 as a 1,100-acre recreational and community center of West Deptford Township, NJ, while Red Bank dates back to pre-Revolutionary War times.Cabaret Night at Leas Lounge
Residents have talent. Funny jokes, witty lyrics, beautiful music, and an engaged audience. What more could one ask of the “First Annual” Cabaret Night at the Lumberton Campus? Words don’t suffice, you had to be there. But the photos in the gallery provide memories for those who were there and a glimpse for those who were not. Joe Costanza – World Series of Birding
World Series of Birding – The Rancocas Conservancy Brown Creekers

The World Series of Birding requires a substantial amount of preparation; scouting various sites for resident species, seeking our “target” birds, and itinerary planning. During the two weeks before the event, as individuals, and sometime in pairs, we checked several locations in Burlington, Atlantic, Cumberland, and Cape May counties. Susan Setterberg, who had returned for the event from her new home in Washington State, carefully planned a detailed timed itinerary that would take us through a variety of birding habitats.
Being a notoriously late starter for a birder, I set my alarm for 3:00 AM, hoping that would give me enough time for a cup of coffee before our team rendezvoused in Tabernacle at 4:15.It was to be my 21st World Series of birding, and the weather forecast was not encouraging. Joe Costanza, Nature Photographer
Joe, who moved to Medford Leas at Lumberton in 2010, has organized his bird photography into five albums: Birds of Fields and Woods; Birds of Prey; Gulls, Terns, and Shorebirds; Marsh and Wading Birds; and Waterfowl and Swimming Birds.
On Saturday May 10 Joe Costanza is raising money for the Rancocas Nature Conservancy through participation in the NJ Audubon Society’s World Series of Birding event.
